...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

{better minds than mine are silent with the immensity of where we are, what we're facing. I would only say for now, that it won't come as a single thing when it comes, one plot device at a time the way it always is in the flat dreams of movies and television, more like blindsiding hits from unexpected sources, in unpredictable rhythm, and yet this too, the unforeseen grace, the surprising courage of the ignored and underestimated, all mixed in, all coming faster than light, or it can seem that way.

for years the advocacy of any kind of violence has been an adolescent death-wish for what I still think of as 'us'. a minority hidden in the crowd, the few of us who did stand up were turned into such horrifying examples that it became of absolute importance to shy away from direct confrontation. the age-old dilemma. Red Cloud's dilemma, Chief Joseph's dilemma. but it was that way for them because they still had people to protect. there was a future ahead however compromised.

I don't think it's time to give up on the possibility of miracles, but I am not in any sense advocating magical thinking or 'spiritual' delusion. it's just not time to give up on the idea of change for the good.

there's a lot of kids who are waking up to what's been done. the straddling necessary to continue, to raise them up, the balance between loving illusion and unspoken grief, between calm insistence on the normality of our daily living and steadily more focused rage, is the responsibility of many of us for the moment. we can do what needs to be done, whether it's enduring storms of astonishing force, or facing the end of it all, we can do what we have to do, when the time comes.}
