...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

_"The Register: Gates gives $421m to fight Linux, $100m to fight HIV. Oh, and let's not forget the five, count 'em, five, vanity puff-pieces appearing in the New York Times this week glorifying Billg's generosity, one of which he wrote himself. That's worth quite a lot too, in PR brownie points for both him and his company."_

It's impossible not to share the cynicism about Gates' corporate intentions. But I'm equally sure that he's sincere in his philanthropy -- and, in particular, the desire to make a real difference in stopping some of humanity's killer diseases.

I saw Gates talk about this at the World Economic Forum a couple of years ago. He was passionate in his challenge to government and business leaders, saying they had to do much more.

Yes, his foundation is endowed with ill-gotten gains. But at least the money is going to good works, for the most part.

contrast with all them people like Limbaugh et al.
fairness,a dedication to a higher truth, a willingness to risk personal status in an effort to keep things real, and honest. to a fault.
always the miracle is, to me, why there's any good guys in the world at all. outnumbered outgunned, and only able to utilize the thin pie-wedge of honorable actions, whilst them other folks can do most anything that gets in their heads.
a lying sack o'shit like the aforementioned Limbaugh can also walk an old lady across the street, donate a catcher's mitt to the orphan's home, etc. in addition to taking the truth for a ride in the country on a daily basis.
well, it's a ponder, surely.}
