This is what's missing from the American dialog, but you can be sure it's central to the view of the men who run what's left of the country. That explains a lot, if you let it. Social panic as the little people wake up to impending doom.
It will push weaker minds right into the readymade snares of apocalyptic religion.
So the clampdown and suspension of rights. All the rest of the litany of complaints takes on a completely different resonance in counterpoint to what's happening to the earth itself.
My only real problem with that "Big Brother" prep drill is that the guys who are scurrying around getting ready for the trouble are the guys that caused it to begin with, or their heirs. Behind them are these sort of angelic creatures, who've never compromised their integrity or morality - but they also never did anything about what's happening. Like virtuous young Mormons looking out on a landscape that's absorbed the blood of murdered Indians. Feeling innocent.
There's a lot of chaos beginning, seeds of it forming, and a lot of that vigilante chorus, the mob with their pitchforks and torches. Not yet but it's there in embryo. So of course we need to have laws to protect public order. And if they have to suspend other laws to make people safe, they probably should; unless, like I said, they're the assholes that did it.
And to have to watch these Ford commercials on TV - the pristine wilderness, the SUV - it's like being anally raped by a drunk accountant.
If my hands weren't tied...
