Gypsies who arrived in the earlier period of immigration are more established, settled and assimilated, although they retain their customs and practices in their homes. They have learned to negotiate living in two worlds: that of mainstream society and that of their gypsy communities. There is a marked difference between them and the more traditional gypsies who have arrived in the United States in the late twentieth century as a result of the conflict in the Balkans.
