...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

People keep wanting to give my mother, who's 90, Lexapro. The Hospice nurse, one of them, and "friends" from when she was still a practicing Catholic. It's wonderful to me, the way someone can get run out of town for suggesting it might not hurt teenagers to smoke marijuana, but the entire culture seems bent on dosing everyone in sight with pharmaceutical chemicals, which it is forbidden to call "drugs" lest they be lumped in the same taboo category as marijuana and heroin, which are both illegal "drugs", and as such, indistiguishable from each other.
Wonderful that society will accept all illegal "drugs" being lumped together, so that arrests for crack cocaine are no different than arrests for psilocybin mushrooms in the eyes of the law and the public, but will distinguish uncertified-by-unbiased-pro-public-agency potentially harmful chemicals like this, as beneficial, because the doctor says so. The doctor, who is more and more a servant of the drug companies - which don't sell "drugs", ("mood elevators" are not "drugs") because children must be taught to "say no to drugs".
The benefit to me personally is it keeps me from integrating with the larger culture, and that's becoming more and more an issue, as America collapses into itself and the world falls into the hands of organized, and increasingly ruthless, criminals.
