Letter from Iraq, 27 March 1991

...He looked really scared as I approached him. I gave him all the food I had and a bottle of water. He sat down and devoured everything I gave him. I then gave him my hand, which he took, and walked him over to the medics. The medics cleaned his wounds and wrapped them.
I got yelled at because we�re not supposed to let Iraqis into the perimeter. I told the Captain who was yelling at me to kiss my ass. I told him I wasn�t going to let this kid suffer when we had the ability to help. That Captain is just a real asshole.
Anyway, when the medics got done with the kid, I brought him outside of the perimeter. I dug into my rucksack and gave him all the food I had been saving. I gave him a little red backpack I had found to put the food and water I gave him in. I pointed him back to the road. He smiled and gave me a salute, like no salute I�ve ever gotten...
