Iran jurist is awarded the Nobel for Peace
Ebadi, the first Iranian to win the prize, was a "sound professional, a courageous person, and has never heeded the threat to her own safety."
She is the third Muslim to win the Peace Prize. Yasser Arafat won the prize in 1994, sharing it with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres of Israel and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was later assassinated. In 1978, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt shared the prize with Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel for jointly negotiating peace between the two countries.
