...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

{A few weeks back I was removed from a comment thread at, I think, Making Light, for suggesting that the US government had gone into Iraq, not for the reasons it gave, but primarily for the protection of, and acquisition of oil for, Israel, with a soupon of revenge/retaliation for the destruction of Jerusalem and enslavement of the Jews by the Babylonian empire. Point being that, aside from the primary and obvious military benefit of removing Saddam's threat to Israel itself, the seemingly mindless disregard for the antiquities in Baghdad and their looting and destruction was actually vicious and intentional. And that, once the American forces had taken over, a major oil pipeline, shut down during Gulf War 1, would be reopened, thereby freeing Israel from its dependence on Russian petroleum imports.

None of these statements have been proved beyond the shadow of a doubt to be true of course, and anti-Semitism is always of course a horrible example of bigotry and intolerance.

This wonderful graphic, courtesy the most stalwart and undaunted Sam Smith, is of course an anomaly, although it did come from The Office of the House Majority Leader US Rep. Tom DeLay.}

"Though tested by generations of fire, the people of Israel do not exhibit malice or seek revenge. Much like everyday Palestinians, they want peace and the security to live their lives, free from want and free from fear. They are not fools and should not be expected to bargain with murderers. "

JAY LENO - Hey, why don't we send them ours? It worked well for us for over two hundred years . . . and we're not using it anymore.
