Meanwhile, the Bush administration's latest quick-step in the WMD dance, namely that the alleged weapons are absent because they were carried off by looters, is making even committed Blairites cringe. Their grasp of logic extends beyond the usual Sunday morning American TV panel; they realize that would make the invasion the very disease for which it proposed to be the cure. Bald circularity may slip past the jingoistic brainiacs at Fox News but it won't wash in the House of Commons. This is also a lesson in the perils of lackeyhood. Mr. Bush can get away with things at the centre of power that simply will not play at the margins, where nobody's that scared of you.
