...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

saw Richard Ford last night at the local independent bookshop. it's always an event to see and hear someone from the interior landscape actually being and doing in the larger world. he's one of those masters like Alice Munro, whose skills and dedication put them naturally and inarguably out of reach of the majority mind. and yet it's more and more obvous to me that these and similar others are bearing the light of humanity, carrying it forward. he's Eudora Welty's executor(literary) and Raymond Carver's too. and that batting cage image from Independence Day(and there it is right there, as clear a line as can be drawn, if you think movie rather than book in that context we're pretty well done here). anyway it's like it was when I saw Doug Peacock (grizzly man) speak- brave resolute minds and hearts engaged, encouraging, shaming, slamming home the bitter fact of what my life has been, and the conscience goad that it's still not too late . only now I'm so close to being finished with all this it doesn't cause that much emotion.
later on got a ticket for one headlight out. and it's funny but I was scared, thought the insurance had lapsed. as though it matters now.
