...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

{I woke up thinking about time. something no one ever seems to get about stuff like prophecy and dreams that tell the future, things like that. it's just there. if it does exist. but there's always some quacky little fuck that wants to put the mumbo on it. so that because jimmy can call the outcome that means he's got the private line in. but it doesn't mean that any more than having a telescope that allows you to see the surface of the moon in vivid micro detail means you can go there. or that you had anything to do with making the moon. or that you're aligned with the moon god or ANY other attribute but the one clear thing. you can see it.
ok then I was thinking about how it's like the technology too. in that when you do see the surface of the moon in micro detail, YOU'RE NOT GOING THERE TO DO IT!!! the light is coming to you. or rather the light was always there, you just figured out a way to bring it in to your very limited perceptual apparatus. and that's what I thought I'd try to catch. that idea that the light is already there. you don't go up to the moon to get it. the same light was there ten tousand years ago, in the sense the reflected sunlight was bouncing off the lunar surface then, and striking the earth. but evidently nobody back then had smooth enough glass lenses.
so it's quite likely the same with time. our experience of it is uni-directional. we have these philosophical hypotheses running about what it is but they're mostly based on OUR experience of time being the only possible, the only attributes of time in other words are the ones we ALREADY know. but I think it's like the light. it's here. most of us just don't have the right lenses to bring it in.}
