...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

"We are always concerned about attitude because we don't know what the flash point is," Mr. Foxman said, referring to remarks made by the Quigleys that the Aronsons taped and found offensive. "With latent anti-Semitism, at what point is attitude converted into action or violence? This is what concerns us, and I would hope this verdict does not have a chilling effect on what we do.
"We will continue to stand up against racism and anti-Semitism. Even though we are sometimes misconstrued, that has always been our strength."

Abraham Foxman national director of the ADL (Anti-Defamation League), commenting on the first verdict ever against the league, a suit in Colorado whose details are too intricate to post.
A federal appeals panel recently split 2 to 1 on this question, with the majority affirming a $10.5 million jury verdict against the ADL. But the ADL's attorneys, heartened by the arguments of dissenting Judge Harris Hartz, have since filed a petition requesting that the full court review the case - meaning the debate grinds on.

{A lot of the Google on this is predictably lunar. Cowardice at the center of all of it. Cowardice and the projectile selfishness of groupdom. There was this thing in the New Yorker back in the 70's talking about why there were so many Chinese groceries in the South. You could get another pretty good-sized article about why every motel in the US seems to be owned by someone named Patel. Jews are accused of only being loyal to their own. But when does that stop being a characteristic, and become a response? Do you think I'm going to be loyal to you after you've run me out of every home I've made? It's psychoses at every turn. They're nuts, you're nuts, I'm nuts, and the kids are all nuts because the grown-ups control everything and the grown-ups are nuts.
I had this vision one time of the Industrial Revolution, the juggernaut of technological rapacity being a response to a kind of group-mind vision of the collapse of the natural world, the de-humanizing of the landscape, the terminal apocalyptic future. So it was this semi-immortal thing that we all make together dimly seeing bad business ahead, and trying as hard as it could to get the tools necessary to build its little lifeboats and get. Off planet. Away. And in the process creating the very conditions it tried so hard to escape.
Jewish chauvinism is escalating, as is the very rational fear of persecution. The duplicity and vicious brutality of the Israeli government and its junkyard dog of a military is disheartening when it isn't terrifying.
A miniature version of all this is playing out in California around Bustamante's associating with MeChA. I've never heard anyone nail the causes of what's called racism accurately. It's another mask I think anyway. The real evil shifts away from the light.}
