We now know that fossils can be found in some of the oldest rocks on earth. Life is at least 3500 million years old and probably older (Schopf, 1999). Even metazoan fossils appear in the rock record in the latest Proterozoic (see Ediacara), millions of years before the beginning of the Cambrian.
