...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

A letter, now an open letter, to Jeanne d'Arc, at Body and Soul, after having been ostracized from her comments section:
Jeanne,
Those people are dying in Iraq because of Israel.
Kerry is owned by Israel, as Bush was, and is.
Bush has outlasted his usefulness.
Israel will now destroy Iran, or try to, and Syria, and Jordan.
Kerry is not going to oppose that. He can't.
You seem to be more willing to get to a safe place than your nom de
guerre would indicate.
You're afraid, but I'm disappointed.
Deeply and profoundly.
It's frustrating for me, as you knew it would be.
That little frisson of righteousness you feel comes from that.
Stopping the bad man.

But the truth of what I've said will outlast your timidity.
Cowardice is a virtue now, in this moment, in this place.
And my guess is you feel virtuous, and protected.
Do you feel stronger now?
Is the world safer?
Do you have any idea how vulnerable _I_ am?
There's nothing in what I've said, or more importantly how I've said
it, at Body and Soul that deserves this.
So there's either a larger agenda, that gives you permission to act
this way, or you've rationalized it.
There is a larger context of course, there always is.
What piece of that you see, what part of it you've been given, I have
no way of knowing.
And it doesn't interest me that much. I have a few months left at
most, more likely just weeks.
You have longer than that, but to do what?
Continue to run from the truth until it's unavoidable?
Innocent people are dying because of these lies we're being told.
You protect yourself at their expense.
It may be sensible, but it's not brave.
________

Last year I had a comment subjected to censorious garbling, at either elctrolite or Making Light, I can't remember which, for much the same content overall, a pessimistic denunciation of what is masked as a war against terrorism but is in fact, and is becoming daily more clear as, a war to protect the racist and psychotically immoral theocratic government of Israel.
I mentioned the likelihood of the sacking of the Baghdad Museum being in retaliation for the enslavement of the Jews 2500 years ago. An historical fact most people still don't have.
Lots of the middle-class blogs were making noise about the inexplicable destruction of antiquities. It seemd to make perfect sense in one light, I said that, and of course was accused of anti-semitism and kicked off the thread.
It's a lame exercise for me, squawking at what are essentially mediocre intellects, who when pushed hard enough will collaborate with anything that promises to extend their safety and comfort levels.
There's a filter running, as there always is, on whose characteristics will make the cut, the next generation slightly less or more of whatever's been selected for and against - by environmental conditions in the natural world, by the social conditions of the human world.
Cowardice is a survival trait. Fear is now a legitimate excuse for any action.
Given enough time this will become an essential part of human nature.
America is burning 382 million gallons of gasoline every day, and otherwise sensible people, who think of themselves as relatively normal, are discussing with all seriousness the intricacies of torture and death in a foreign country whose people are being sacrificed to provide those millions of gallons of gas.
Israel owns Russia's oil now.
The richest man in England is a Zionist Jew.
The American media is owned and run by Jews, with only the rarest of compromised exceptions. Non-controversial, non-threatening news and entertainment is allowed, but nothing that questions the larger purpose, the less apparent intent.
So what?
Well that depends on your affinities I guess.
Me I'm constitutionally with the underdog, I can't help it.
It's disgusting the way Jewish suffering is held up like a shield by the current perpetrators of mass death and destruction, who are themselves Jews.
As though because someone, because so many died in Auschwitz who were Jewish, now no Jew can sin.
Now there is no Jewish evil, only martyrdom and defense.
You could make the same argument for any group. It's specious, nonsense for the dim and the timid.
Timidity being the subject here.
Cowardice is not a failing because of some commandment or rule. It's wrong because it elevates the self above all else.
The converse is why we esteem bravery; the courageous put other things above themselves.
Selfishness is at the heart of every evil thing.
An argument could be made that what I've done to cause this censoring, and the cunning and deception that follows invisibly behind and around it, is selfish. But it would be easy to refute.
Another argument could be made, that I'm mad, insane, a disturbed anti-semite.
That's not as easy to refute now as it will be, in a little while.
