...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

Training Day with Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington getting right down into the spasming gristle of the real economy, is one violent scene after another. I saw it on TV last night, part of it, most of it. It honors what deserves honor, but what disturbed me about what I saw last night was that, throughout, with all the blood and realistic bruises and gunshots and beatings, and a little kid in the midst of horrible violence, "they" censored the language.
No fuck, no shit, no motherfucker. A shotgun blast to the chest at close range, a man beaten and crawling and beaten again, but no "shit".
The disgusting cowardice at the heart of the decisions that lead to this will, if it's allowed to continue to dominate the culture and popular art, destroy us all. Not because little kids need to see violent movies with the cuss words intact, but because that cowardice and sexual pathology, the weak sickness that lets this hypocrisy become a moral standard under which children are raised, will be all that stands between us and the darkness, between us and chaos, between our children and real evil.
