...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

BBC - Radio 4 - Reith Lectures 2002 - Lecture Five The received wisdom on press freedom assumes that freedoms and rights can be free-standing. In fact there are no rights without counterpart obligations or duties. Respecting obligations, performing our duties, is as vital for communication as for other activities. At the very least we have obligations to communicate in ways that do not destroy or undermine others' prospects of communicating. Yet deceivers do just this.
{one of the main logical fallacies is unsupported statements of fact. "we all know there are no rights without counterpart obligations...." well no ma'am we don't all know that. I can easily imagine the rights of a child and the complete lack of commensurate obligation, unless you want to place the onus of unhindered joyful exploration on the little tykes. and not just children, I see a kind of everyman, true freedom, limitless imagination, the only obligation a negative, to NOT do things that harm, the rest is wide open and I don't think that's an obligation. something else. closer to art than politics. as art is closer to the heart of life than rules are.}
