Nothing in the bylaws requires the so-called "Superdelegates" to declare a candidate preference ahead of the convention, and nothing prohibits them from changing their mind once they declare such a preference.
Superdelegates get to cast a vote for the nominee at the 2008 Convention, and are not obligated to vote for the candidate who won their state. For that purpose, we want to track which candidate the delegates have endorsed to get an idea of how they would vote at the convention.

Since this is what's going to elect the next President of the US, we should probably pay attention to how it works. So far it looks like the electoral college:
A result of the present functionality of the Electoral College is that the national popular vote bears no legal or factual significance. As the aggregate popular vote is irrelevant, both voters and candidates may base their campaign strategies around the existence of the Electoral College. Claims that the Electoral College suppresses the popular will are therefore legitimately open to debate.
