Venezuela's President Chavez named his own socialist revolution after South America's 19th century liberator Simon Bolivar, but often quotes "El Che" and calls on today's youth to be more like him. "Che held the banner for critical thinking. He was a banner-holder for critical thinking," Chavez said recently during a political rally in Caracas.
Bolivia's first indigenous president Evo Morales hung a huge portrait of Guevara in his office, controversially made out of pressed coca leaves.
Although it was Bolivian troops that captured and executed him, President Morales describes Guevara as a mythical hero. "Who could ever consider themselves to be his successor? It is impossible to eclipse the live of Che. Nobody could do that. One could consider themselves the successor of Che only if they give their life for humanity. While we are still alive, we could never consider ourselves the successors of Che," Morales told Reuters in a recent interview in La Paz.
