...But of these sophisms and elenchs of merchandise I skill not...
Milton, Areopagitica

Except he had found the
standing sea-rock that even this last
Temptation breaks on; quieter than death but lovelier; peace
that quiets the desire even of praising it.

A site that calls itself wintersoldier.com is an attempt to hitchike on the phrase and backspin the message. The dishonesty in the name alone undoes any credibility the authors might have been given.
To say "But the mass murder of civilians was never American policy in Vietnam...", as though that somehow refutes what the soldiers were testifying to, is very lame.
That was the point then, and it's the point now. All kinds of terrible inhuman and horrifying things get done, and their effects used to further the aims of those who set up these forays into the unspeakable, then the cut-out short-circuits when the truth starts leaking under the door. What those guys did was bring it home. What the web has made possible in the case of the tip of the iceberg that the Abu Ghraib photos reveal, is those cut-outs don't work so well anymore, there's too much wiring now, too many nodes.
The point was, and is, that "policy" is a flag, a banner, a symbol.
The point was that everything those boys were told they were fighting for, and everything they were told they were fighting against, had been reversed somehow.
It looks like a lawn mower to me.
A rigid handle of good intentions and this horrible bloody chopping whirling nightmare down there in between the wheels.
