AmphibiaWeb Many people are aware that there is a major extinction episode in process that is substantially reducing the biological diversity of the earth. The causes are anthropogenic, principally the destruction and degradation of habitat, particularly the tropical forests. Thousands of invertebrate animal species of these forests are being lost forever before they are even known to science. There are also many vertebrates that are threatened with extinction, and the most mysterious and challenging situation is that of the amphibians.
