Evidence has come to light recently about CIA complicity in events that lead to the murder of innocent civilians during a coup in Venezuela two years ago. The stated goal, according to a CIA document obtained recently under the Freedom of Information Act, was to create a pretext for overthrowing a democratically elected leader, Hugo Chavez Frias, in Venezuela.
This disinformation by Lantos and the Bush administration on the subject of the democratic process in Venezuela is similar to the distortions we US citizens were subjected to about the circumstances of President Aristide's kidnapping/coup in Haiti.
No Mr. Lantos, this was a coup -- repeating the "big lie" long enough will not hide this naked fact.
More, Mr. Lantos also besmirches Venezuelan attorney Danilo Anderson, recently assassinated (maybe a CIA operation as well) this past week. This is the height of ignorance and arrogance. The man was an admirable public servant tasked with the ominous job of prosecuting members of the Venezuelan oligarchy who participated in the April 11 coup, a group of folks accustomed to almost total impunity.
The strong possibility of CIA participation in this act of state terrorism makes Mr. Lantos' comments utterly contemptible ... not merely untimely and inopportune.
