EU governments can ban GM food:
The European Union high court has ruled member governments can temporarily ban genetically modified foods if they suspect they threaten health or the environment.

The Court said Italy was entitled to ban foodstuffs - notably flour made from genetically modified maize - by Monsanto Europe and two other companies.

A European nation 'can as a preventive measure ... temporarily restrict or suspend the marketing of those foods in its territory,' the Luxembourg based court said . There should be no 'relaxation of the safety requirements that must be met by novel foods.'
