How to irrigate the Sahara -- engineers have been studying that one for a long time. Some say it would be easiest to bring water through an aqueduct all the way across the Atlantic from the mouth of South America's Amazon. They go so far as to say it would cost less than the cost of the system that routes water into Southern California.
