Every time you see the word "environment" in the media, change it to "our lives and the lives of our children" and change "environmentalists" to "people who care about our lives and the lives of our children".
This will make things a little cumbersome, but it's a far more accurate description of what's there.
As in:

As in:

Environmentalists force way onto coal trains

And:

Schwarzenegger envisions future role as Obama 'energy and environment czar'

And:

Mexico environmentalists fear deforestation to go unabated in UN world heritage site

When the journalist is outright lying, or as near to outright anything as mainstream journalists get these days, it won't scan as well. As in:

Environmentalists Say Yes to Offshore Drilling

Also note the way the ITH headline isolates concern for the Monarch butterfly to Mexico, as if it was mostly a local issue, making it more readily dismissable.
